Stuart Bain marches in Labor Day Parade, confronts Goodlatte on “Big Government” issues

BUENA VISTA — Candidate Stuart Bain (Libertarian Party, VA-06) marched with his family and his campaign staff in the Buena Vista Labor Day parade Monday. Bain, who still works a full-time job while he runs for Congress, walked in the parade, shaking hands with voters.  He was followed by his wife and children who threw candy from the back of a pick-up truck driven by Bain’s father. Representative Goodlatte brought a bus full of supporters with him, and Governor McDonnell was flown in on a taxpayer-purchased helicopter.

After the parade; Stuart Bain, Bob Goodlatte, and an independent candidate spoke for the first time together. Bain’s speech passionately argued for smaller government and called out Goodlatte on his 2003 vote in favor of Medicare Part D, a bill that Bain says, “expanded socialism in the United States.” Congressman Goodlatte left the stage before his opponents spoke, having previously refused dozens of offers for a three-way debate with both Bain and the independent.

“We cannot restore these United States and return honor and principle to this country if we continue to make millionaire career politicians our voice in Washington D.C.,” Bain said in his speech, “We must demand transparency on all issues that involve our well being.” After his speech, he told NBC affiliate WVIR-TV, “Congressman Goodlatte will say he’s for smaller government and supports limited government under the rule of the Constitution, but when I go back and look at his voting record, that’s not what I find.”

Power Exercised by One Administration is Inherited by the Next

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

I saw the following in the Cato Institute’s coverage of the State of the Union address by President Obama this evening and found it rather fitting. I am regularly asked “why are you running for congress?” Read this and it may help you understand:

Gene Healy says that “When all eyes turn to the president, demanding he cure whatever ails us, the result is a dangerous concentration of federal power.” Tonight this dangerous concentration of federal power was on full display for an electorate that – thankfully — appears to be growing leery of the president’s ambition to exert further federal control over our lives.

There is a lesson to be learned this evening, and one that the burgeoning Tea Party movement in particular should heed. President Obama didn’t suddenly wake up last January with the awesome power to shape every facet of our lives: how we educate our children, get medical care, or purchase a car or house. It was the actions of his Democratic and Republican predecessors that enable him to wield such power today.

The preceding Bush administration illustrates how power exercised by one administration is inherited by the next. In particular, the massive increase in federal spending, deficits, and debt that President Obama is rightly being criticized for are a continuation of the Bush legacy. Sure they differ on the details and some of the issues, but at the end of the day both men have demonstrated through their actions that they believe our individual liberties should be subjugated to the almighty state.

Let’s take that last sentence one more time with a little modification and emphasis:

Sure [President Obama and President Bush] differ on the details and some of the issues, but at the end of the day both men have demonstrated through their actions that they believe our individual liberties should be subjugated to the almighty state.

VCDL and Self Defense

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

This evening I had the opportunity to attend a local meeting of the Virginia Citizen’s Defense League (VCDL) here in Salem, VA. The VCDL is a very active organization that helps protect citizens’ rights to defend themselves by working with our state lawmakers towards sensible gun-related laws and protection of our constitutional 2nd amendment rights. Chip and Jo’s restaurant hosted the event, and I was very pleased to see the entire restaurant was full of VCDL members and visitors! After enjoying a wonderful meal, Mr. Al Steed offered me the opportunity to speak. I wanted to make sure everyone else knows a little bit about what I said tonight because I think what I mentioned is important for all to understand. Here are a few bullet points from my short address to tonight’s attendees:

  • I wholeheartedly support the 2nd amendment.
  • I am a Concealed Handgun Permit holder.
  • I think our government should serve to protect our rights instead of constantly trying to whittle away at them.
  • I am not a lawyer nor am I a career politician.
  • I have nothing against lawyers, but I do think we already have plenty in Washington D.C.
  • As of yet, there is no need to worry about “splitting the conservative vote” for this year’s congressional election here in Virginia’s 6th district.
  • I support Virginia’s assertion of its sovereignty through the current Healthcare Freedom Act and Firearms Freedom Act making their way through the state legislature. In addition to these 10th amendment legislative items being worked on at the state level, I feel it is important to have someone fighting for constitutional restraint at the federal level. I will be that person.

I am very humbled to have been afforded the opportunity to speak and, more especially meet and shake hands with VCDL’s President, Mr. Philip Van Cleave. I gladly handed him my membership application and $25 membership fee to join this fine organization.

Semper Fi,

– Stuart

On July 4th, 2009, Stuart Bain spoke at the Roanoke Tax Day Tea Party’s Independence Day rally. Here is the video of Mr. Bain’s speech courtesy of fellow patriot, Erik Kritter.

Note: The speech’s introduction labels Mr. Bain as a “Republican” candidate even though Mr. Bain’s beliefs and ideals match more closely with those which are traditionally considered “Libertarian.”
