Final Days of the Campaign

Roanoke, VA – Stuart Bain, Libertarian candidate for Virginia’s sixth district Congressional seat, is providing as many last-chance opportunities for sixth district voters to meet and ask questions. On Saturday, October 30th, Stuart spoke to concerned citizens and voters at the Salem Pumpkin Fest. Later that afternoon, Stuart attended the Sedalia Center Chili Cookoff with members of the local Libertarian Party in Big Island, Virginia outside of Bedford.

To close out the campaign in the last two days prior to election day, Stuart will hold two virtual town hall meetings. To watch Stuart’s virtual town halls, you can tune in at StuartBain.com on Sunday, October 31st at 8 PM (costumes not required). You are invited to watch the live broadcast and participate in the town hall via the convenient Internet chat room that will be set up on the front page of the site. Sunday’s town hall will be more geared towards supporters and volunteers to answer last minute questions and concerns for coordinating election day activities. The public is also welcome to attend.

At 7:00PM on November 1st, Stuart will hold his last virtual town hall for all interested parties. Log on to http://stuartbain.com/ at 7PM on Monday to attend. The virtual town hall on Monday evening will last until 10:00PM or later if more time is needed to answer questions.

On election night, November 2nd, Stuart Bain will join the Roanoke Tea Party at their “Incumbent Retirement Party” to watch the election results.

Closing in on Election Day

Roanoke, VA – With Election Day right around the corner, Stuart Bain, Libertarian candidate for Virginia’s 6th district, is balancing a full schedule on the campaign trail with his family life and his full-time job.

This week, Bain will be making stops in various locations across the district to listen to last-minute questions and concerns of 6th district voters. At 7:00 PM tomorrow, Monday, October 25th, Bain will be stopping at Famous Anthony’s on Lakeside Drive in Lynchburg to speak and answer questions. At 7:30 PM, Tuesday, the 26th, Bain will be debating his opponents in the Memorial Hall Auditorium at James Madison University, followed by an after-party and a Q&A session at Dave’s Downtown Taverna in Harrisonburg. On Wednesday at 7:00 PM, Bain will have another forum to answer questions at Tailgate Grill in Waynesboro.

All of these events are open to the public.

On Thursday, Bain will be attending the Shenandoah Valley Tea Party meeting in Harrisonburg. The Tea Party has been instrumental to Bain’s campaign, with many groups helping to spread his campaign’s message while many local media outlets refuse to cover any election without both a Republican and a Democrat on the ballot. The Roanoke Tea Party vetted the candidates this year and gave Stuart Bain their highest commendation, giving incumbent Republican Goodlatte a rating of “Failure, with some hope of redemption.”

During the day, Stuart Bain still works a full-time job as the Chief Technical Officer of a local web design and marketing firm. He also makes sure to keep time available for his wife Sarah and their two young children.

While this may seem like a stressful time, to Bain and his campaign it is a victory lap of sorts. “No matter the outcome on November 2nd,” Bain said, “I will be happy to see November 3rd come around.” His campaign manager, John Braden, added, “When [Stuart Bain] started his campaign, he expected to be trounced in the polls on election day. With no Democrat in the race, we have a legitimate shot to win. I don’t think any of the Bains saw this coming, and I know that Stuart will be happy with the results. It’s about educating the voters about their alternatives; that there is a solution for our nation’s problems. It isn’t a solution that involves expensive programs, stifling regulations, or tax hikes. The way to solve most of our country’s problems is to shrink the bloated federal government: As long as we know we got that message out there–and, boy, did we ever!–I can sleep comfortably knowing that we did what we sought to do. Still, I’m hopeful that Stuart will win this election. I think voters are sick and tired of their 18-year incumbent.”

Bain Gets Highest Possible Rating from Tea Party; More Americans Want Third Party Alternatives to Incumbents

Roanoke, VA – The Libertarian Party and independent candidates in the 6th district election, Stuart Bain and Jeff Vanke, fielded questions last weekend at the Virginia Tea Party Patriots convention in Richmond.  Incumbent Bob Goodlatte (R) was invited to participate, but declined.  Although he was able to attend the VIP gala the night before, Rep. Goodlatte scheduled and attended other events rather than participate in the debate.

The day after the candidate forum in Richmond, The Roanoke Tea Party vetted Mr Bain. with their highest possible rating[1], stating, “He Understands the Constitution and Seems Ready to Uphold The Oath of Office.”  Incumbent Goodlatte received an overall rating of, “Failure with some hope of redemption.”  The Roanoke Tea Party board cited Goodlatte’s broken term limit promise and his support for legislation such as the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, Medicare Part D, and the UIGEA among the reasons for his failure. Independent Jeff Vanke was rated, “Little/No chance the candidate will uphold their oath,” with, “many platform positions that are simply incompatible with the Constitution.”

This comes on the eve of a poll by TheHill.com[2] which says, “Fifty-four percent of respondents in The Hill 2010 Midterm Election Poll said they’d like an alternative to the Democrats and Republicans… That number rose to 67 percent for self-identified independents. But even a plurality in the established parties — 49 percent of Democrats and 46 percent of Republicans — said they’d like another choice.”

Stuart Bain uses every opportunity on the campaign trail to remind people of what is at stake in this election.  In his view, since there is no Democrat in the race this year, “People are no longer given the choice between Big Left-Wing Government and Big Right-Wing Government.  They now have a serious, viable choice between Liberty and the Status Quo.”  It seems that without the risk of losing the Congressional seat to a Democrat, conservatives in the 6th district are using the tight race between Bain and Goodlatte to define their positions on issues such as the size of government, the US tax code, and the role of the federal government in private citizens’ lives.

In what he calls a, “perfect storm of events, a referendum on the status quo,” Stuart Bain went from having a small, dedicated group of supporters to a thriving, full-scale campaign for United States Congress in the course of a few weeks.  If Bain’s momentum continues at this rate and Goodlatte continues to refuse invitations to public debates, Stuart Bain will win the election on November 2nd, making him the first Libertarian Party candidate to ever be elected to federal office.

Stuart Bain will be speaking and answering questions for the Botetourt Tea Party at the Old Fincastle Courthouse on Thursday, October 21st at 6 PM.  He will then drive to the Shenandoah Tea Party meeting at the Staunton Library to speak at 8:30 PM and stay late to answer questions.

Bain and Vanke recently accepted invitations to a second debate tentatively scheduled for the 26th of October at James Madison University. Congressman Goodlatte was also invited Goodlatte but has yet to respond.

Stuart Bain is running for the United States House of Representatives in the sixth district of Virginia against incumbent Bob Goodlatte.  He served in the United States Marine Corps after high school and studied computer science and business at Virginia Tech and American Sentinel University. He and his wife Sarah live in Salem, Virginia and have two children. Stuart is employed by a Roanoke-based web technology and marketing firm where he has served in the capacity of IT manager and Chief Technical Officer for the past eight years.  He has the endorsement of the Libertarian Party and is the only candidate in the race who supports the popular FairTax Plan.

Stuart Bain Aces Ron Paul’s Campaign For Liberty Litmus Test

Roanoke, Va. – 6th district Libertarian congressional candidate Stuart Bain  has been given a score by Ron Paul’s lobbying organization, Campaign for Liberty,  of 100%. Campaign for Liberty’s mission is “to promote and defend the great American principles of individual liberty, constitutional government, sound money, free markets, and a noninterventionist foreign policy, by means of educational and political activity”. Bob Goodlatte(R) subsequently failed at taking the litmus test. The test covered questions such as “Will you cosponsor and call for roll call votes on Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed bill, designed to bring transparency to the Federal Reserve (H.R. 1207/ S. 604 in the 111th Congress)?”, which Stuart Bain answered YES, as well as to questions such as “Do you support and will you vote to protect states asserting their rights under the Tenth Amendment?”, which Bain also answered YES.

Stuart Bain is proud to support Ron Paul and he looks forward to meeting him this weekend at the State Tea Party Convention in Richmond, Va. where they both will be speaking. Dr. Paul is the keynote speaker and Bain will be on the candidate forum for the 6th district, which Bob Goodlatte also declined to participate in.

Prior to the State Tea Party Convention, Bain will be speaking with the Lynchburg Tea Party in person in Lynchburg on Thursday evening.

Stuart Bain Finds Humor in Jeff Vanke’s Push Poll

Roanoke, Va. – On Wednesday, Jeff Vanke is holding a press conference in Roanoke to reach out to voters and tell them about a “push poll” he conducted on his congressional campaign that had him “polling” 4 points under the 18 year-entrenched Republican, Bob Goodlatte. His push poll asked only two questions and implied that his “balanced budget” spreadsheet that he made up “because no one else can do it” , is the saving grace of this country.

This is the copy of the exact wording of the poll:

Hello, we’re conducting a survey on the upcoming Congressional election, and your opinion is important to us.  This survey has only 2 questions and will take less than a minute to complete. If you’re concerned about Federal deficits, press 1.  If you’re not sure, or if you’re not concerned, press 2.

Independent Jeff Vanke has drafted a balanced Federal budget, and he’s running for Congress because no one there has done it.  Eighteen-year incumbent Bob Goodlatte has taken more than $1 million in agribusiness political donations, and he has charged each of us over $2000 in extra taxes to pay for agribusiness subsidies.  Independent Jeff Vanke thinks we can do better. If the election were held today, who would you vote for?  For Independent Jeff Vanke, press 1. For the incumbent, Republican Bob Goodlatte, press 2.  For Libertarian Stuart Bain, press 3. The poll deliberately excludes any mention of what Stuart Bain or the incumbent offer to voters. To the Bain Campaign, this poll mimics the same type of poll that telemarketers use when they are calling to ask you “Press 1 if you want a product that won’t leave you streaks when you mop the floor or Press 2 if you prefer streaks.”

Perhaps in his next “poll” he should tell voters to “Press 1 if you want to vote for Jeff Vanke and receive an extension on your retirement age  and a decrease in your Social Security benefits or Press 2 if you want to vote for Stuart Bain and shrink the size of the over bloated, over regulating federal government and take strong actions to cut the Federal budget and growing Federal deficit.”

Stuart Bain has attended any number of public events.  His public recognition and support has increased significantly after each event.  At every event, Stuart or members of his staff have been asked,  “Who is Jeff Vanke?”  Obviously Jeff has not polled any of these people.

Stuart Bain Questions Goodlatte’s Campaign Ethics

Roanoke, VA – In an attempt to mislead constituents into thinking that his opponents were part of a liberal agenda, Congressman Bob Goodlatte sent a campaign letter out to supporters earlier this month. Goodlatte stated he was in need of campaign contributions to help fight the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda. Goodlatte then went on to state that he has two opponents running in the race without specifying that his opponents are not Democrats and do not intend to sustain the Obama administration’s agenda. In addition to his deceptive remarks, Goodlatte asked for large contributions to add to his already overflowing campaign war chest, which Libertarian Party candidate Stuart Bain questions as to the point, given as Mr. Goodlatte has barely acknowledged his existence in the congressional race.

Bain commented, “Any politician that sees himself needing in excess of $800,000 for the last 50 days or so of a campaign is questionable, especially given the circumstances of this race we are in. Bob Goodlatte has professed that he will likely win, and if that is the case, why would he be groveling for more money? Maybe he will use those funds to go into hiding so he can continue to dodge my requests for a debate.” Bain, a fiscal conservative and supporter of the FairTax Plan, went on to add that, “Goodlatte’s efforts to mislead voters are laughable. He is partly to blame for this economic disaster we’re in, and now he claims to fight against it? Too bad his actions to sustain the Washington D.C. establishment and status quo politics contradict his words. I’m running to give the voters of the 6th district an opportunity to vote for a true conservative. Not Goodlatte’s watered down version.”

Several voters sent a copy of the letter to Stuart Bain’s campaign to profess their outrage at Goodlatte’s efforts to scrape the last couple of thousand dollars he could squeeze off voters before the November 2nd election.

Stuart Bain marches in Labor Day Parade, confronts Goodlatte on “Big Government” issues

BUENA VISTA — Candidate Stuart Bain (Libertarian Party, VA-06) marched with his family and his campaign staff in the Buena Vista Labor Day parade Monday. Bain, who still works a full-time job while he runs for Congress, walked in the parade, shaking hands with voters.  He was followed by his wife and children who threw candy from the back of a pick-up truck driven by Bain’s father. Representative Goodlatte brought a bus full of supporters with him, and Governor McDonnell was flown in on a taxpayer-purchased helicopter.

After the parade; Stuart Bain, Bob Goodlatte, and an independent candidate spoke for the first time together. Bain’s speech passionately argued for smaller government and called out Goodlatte on his 2003 vote in favor of Medicare Part D, a bill that Bain says, “expanded socialism in the United States.” Congressman Goodlatte left the stage before his opponents spoke, having previously refused dozens of offers for a three-way debate with both Bain and the independent.

“We cannot restore these United States and return honor and principle to this country if we continue to make millionaire career politicians our voice in Washington D.C.,” Bain said in his speech, “We must demand transparency on all issues that involve our well being.” After his speech, he told NBC affiliate WVIR-TV, “Congressman Goodlatte will say he’s for smaller government and supports limited government under the rule of the Constitution, but when I go back and look at his voting record, that’s not what I find.”

Stuart Bain Issues Statement on Perriello’s “Libertarian” Comment

Roanoke, VA – Stuart Bain, Libertarian Party candidate for Virginia’s 6th Congressional District race, issued a statement today about Democratic Congressman Tom Perriello’s (VA-05) comment that Obama’s health care plan is, “really being about individual rights and libertarian rights.[1]”

Bain said, “Clearly, Congressman Perriello is either delusional or completely uninformed as to the core principles of liberty. His assertion that the provisions of the Obamacare bill are anywhere close to being in line with the views of libertarians or the Libertarian Party is absurd. Libertarians believe in smaller government and free market solutions. Tom Perriello’s track record proves he believes the exact opposite.”

“Just the individual mandate alone violates everything even remotely related individual liberty. Luckily, we in Virginia don’t have to abide by the individual mandate thanks to Virginia’s Healthcare Freedom Act,” said Bain, referring to the state legislation passed earlier this year to thwart the federal government’s efforts to force citizens to buy health insurance.

When asked about the government forcing others to be charitable towards their fellow citizens, Bain responded that “Forced charity at the hands of the government is not charity at all. It is legalized plunder. If Congressman Perriello truly believed in the principles of liberty, he would know that free market solutions to health care are the only way to ensure cost effective solutions for all. With the amazing resurgence of support for libertarian ideals and principles in the country, it is clear that Congressman Perriello just views this as an opportunity and is using these comments as a ploy and last ditch effort to try and maintain his seat. While Perriello’s comments will no doubt reach the liberty-minded individuals of his district, they will not resonate at all.”

Bain went on to explain that Congressman Perriello’s vote to expand socialism in this country through Obamacare is no different than that of 6th District Congressman Bob Goodlatte’s (R) 2003 vote to expand socialism with the deficit-building, unfunded $5 trillion Medicare expansion. “The only difference is the letter after their names,” he said. “I don’t think either of those two votes are in line with the beliefs of the districts they represent.” Bain then mentioned that the Libertarian Party does not have a candidate running in the 5th district against Perriello this year, but that “the voters will have their say come November. My district and Congressman Perriello’s share areas like Lynchburg and Bedford. I talk to a lot of fired up activists in his district eager to see him defeated.”
